Chinese New Year in Kindergarten!

We learned a little about Chinese New Year in Kindergarten this week.  We talked about how people all over the world created their own calendars before they even knew about the rest of the world.  We pulled down the map and named all the continents and showed how big Asia is.  A few of my kids have relatives in Asia so they were very interested.  We read The Runaway Rice Cake and the kids were easily able to connect the story to the gingerbread men stories we read in December.  The story also shows many of the traditions of Lunar New Year's (noise, dragon and lion dancers, new clothes, the color red, feasting).  And magic!  Perfect!

We made some snazzy dragons, too!

Happy New Year!
