I just got my new Pete the Cat, Rocking in My School Shoes book and I think the kids will really enjoy it. It shows Pete riding the bus, reading in the library, eating in the cafeteria, playing on the playground, and enjoying class activities. It has a very positive message and I plan to read both of them the first day of school. Some teachers will probably use it for a school tour!
You can watch a video with the author, Eric Litwin, singing the song and you can download both the original Pete the Cat and the new one, Rocking in My School Shoes. (just click where it says download and open it in iTunes.)

Here is the video from YouTube of Eric Litwin performing Pete the Cat.
Here is his version (with Pete!) of The Wheels on the Bus.
I tend to read a bunch of books the first weeks of school. I think it helps the kids establish community as we create our class rules and norms.

I love that you READ out loud to your students, a classic tradition and I have dreamt of one day retiring from nursing and being the lady at the library that reads out loud to children. Lucky students to have you as a teacher! Em
Laura, I wrote clues for a Pete the Cat Hunt. See what you think - I just posted the clues on my blog.
