Happy Columbus Day!

We had a wonderful day! We started out discussing what they already knew about Columbus (not much!). I let them look at the front of the book, In 1492, and they made a few predictions.

"He was a captain of a ship."
"He was a pirate."
"He was the first one to float."
"He lived a long time ago."

I wrote the all of them on sticky notes and used the Schema/what we learned from the lesson (found at Eberhart's Explorers.

After we read the book and looked at the world map to explain the story, we made sticky notes of our new knowledge. They did really well! We went through our original ideas to see which of our ideas were true (we removed a few!)

Later, we read Sheep on a Ship. Hehe! They made several text to text connections! Lots of fun!

Then we made some great ship pictures!

I love this activity! I have not been that crazy about our Columbus Day activities and want to try this one next year. Thanks for sharing!
